Ideal Cleaners storefront has been a celebrated fixture in Downtown Oakland for over eight decades. Built in 1938, a recent CulturaI Heritage Survey revealed the building’s design by architect Chester Treichel was built by Edward Larmer as part of a Downtown Oakland’s commercial and residential development eastward after the earthquake of 1906. In 1997, Ideal Cleaners was awarded one of seven Bay area winners of recognition by the Art Deco Society of California for it’s unaltered multi-colored neon sign complimented by the Vitrolux glass façade.

Current owner John Lee has been operating Ideal Cleaners for over 25 years, and is one of only three owners since the business was originally established in 1939. An asset to the Downtown Oakland business community, Mr. Lee has served as Chair of the Korean Cleaners Association of Northern California’s Environmental Committee. He has also received a Certificate of Appreciation from one-time State Assembly Woman Barbara Lee.
